The Evolution of Twitter?
As more people jump on the bandwagon, I fear that Twitter might be in danger of losing its current luster. Here are a few reasons:
1. Rope bridges are scary in groups. Sure it’s exciting to take a trip across with a few friends, but getting everyone you know involved is more than dangerous. What makes it fun and exciting, also makes it dangerous for the masses.
2. The Pareto principle applies to social networking too. Also known as the 80-20 rule, this states that 80% of the value will come from 20% of the people involved. Think of it as a overcrowed party — The more people that crowd into the room, the harder it is to hear. Soon you will only hear 2 things, the people directly next to you and the people with microphone (AKA: Ashton Kutcher)
3. Is Twitter as “Sticky” as other platforms? Face it, the learning curve is steep. Twitter is difficult to explain, teach, and work into your routine. The tools that power users love, might not make sense for the average person. Grouping your followers, setting up searches, and on and on. This isn’t the stuff that Opera talks about. Twitter is not Facebook (nor is it supposed to be), so it’s not as accessible for new users.
What is the future of Twitter? All in all, its up to the masses. Social media’s use is largely determined by how people interact with each other — so we’ll have to wait and see! But like all new tech fads, the platform will continue to evolve as it gains steam and new users.
